Introduction
In today’s Connected Age, where technologies are evolving rapidly, it is of no surprise that Artificial Intelligence picked up the immense attention that it is receiving and that it totally deserves. Ever since the inception of generative AI, people have been resorting to chatbots when it comes to finding answers.
However, imagine this. What if your chatbot doesn’t stop at just giving you answers but also takes actions based on your conversations?
The good news is that this is not just a utopian dream anymore and can actually be made possible.
Presenting to you, AI agents. Read along to find more.
Understanding AI Agents
An AI Agent is a computer program that is capable of rational thinking and decision-making. It is designed to not just provide answers to users’ queries but also to perform actions based on that. It can interact with the user, get the necessary information to perform a task, and operate with little to no human intervention. Consider an example where a user wants to book a movie ticket. A chatbot would give the user an idea about the availability of the tickets, the location of the movie theatre, etc. However, an AI agent would check the availability of the tickets and book them for the users based on their preferences.

Mechanism of Action
A combination of technologies, like Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, Reinforcement Learning, etc., go behind the scenes to develop an AI agent. To perform actions based on user interactions, AI agents are trained on massive amounts of data.
Machine Learning algorithms like Support Vector Machines (SVMs) and Decision Trees are used to find patterns and trends in the data. This enables the AI agents to make data-driven decisions effectively. Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques come in handy when analyzing the user prompts and gathering information from the conversations by helping the agents understand, respond to, and act on user queries. To illustrate, consider this example where a user sends a prompt like, ‘Schedule an appointment with the Doctor this Friday’. The agent will use NLP techniques to process the text, understand the intent of the user, and generate relevant responses while also taking the required actions.
AI agents interact with their environment constantly. They collect data as input, process it, and work on it. This is where Reinforcement Learning (RL) comes into the scene. It helps the agents to maximize the rewards and minimize the penalties. Thus, the whole process is optimized using RL, thereby making the agents learn from the outcomes. To achieve this, huge amounts of data need to be processed in real-time. This entire system is wrapped up inside an IoT (Internet of Things) Framework, thereby facilitating seamless integration with applications and devices.
Future Scope
To succeed in building AI agents is, no doubt, an act of opening the gates to Artificial General Intelligence. This is a huge leap forward in redefining how Artificial Intelligence works. The marvel of Artificial General Intelligence lies in its impeccable problem-solving abilities by leveraging a level of understanding and adaptability akin to human intelligence.
